Transit and Parking Services issued 75 tickets during the first week of classes.

Many of the tickets were issued for parking more than the time allotted in the Day Lot and parking meters, as well as for parking in fire lanes and handicap parking spaces, Auxiliary Services Director Carolyn Smith said. Unlike the rest of the year, when tickets would generally be given to people who parked in areas where parking permits are required, they do not issue tickets during the first week.

“Transit and Parking Services does not issue citations to people parking in a permit area without a permit during the first week of school. This gives people the opportunity to purchase their permit and become familiar with parking regulations,” Smith said.Becoming familiar with parking regulations is an important part of UW life, and the rules can be accessed on the Transit and Parking Services website.Parking is an issue at UW, but Smith says that Transit and Parking Services looks for ways to solve parking issues wherever possible.

“UW has been fortunate to receive legislative and donor funding for new facilities and the renovation for current facilities, and parking lot footprints can be affected,” Smith said.

Even with limited on campus parking, UW offers several public transportation options. UW oversees Gem City Grand, Classroom Express, South Express and Union Express so students can park and ride without having to worry about parking or tickets.
