Various campus organizations came together Wednesday to inform students about their causes on RSO and Organization Day.
An RSO is a recognized student organization and UW has one for most purposes or needs.
The International Justice Mission was one RSO at the event. IJM is a human rights-based organization that focuses on slavery of varying kinds, member Rachel Dowd said.
“IJM works in 12 countries and focuses on different types of slavery, including sex trafficking and forced labor,” Dowd said.
“What’s cool about IJM is that nationals are the ones who are doing the work in their respective countries. If you go to India then it’s Indian lawyers working to bring human rights through their justice system.”
Phi Alpha Delta, UW’s pre-law fraternity, also was involved in RSO and Organization Day.
“In Phi Alpha Delta we participate in mock LSAT exams and attorneys will also come in and talk to us,” member Lindsey Wambolt said. “We also will visit different law schools, including the one at DU and CU, and of course the law school here.”
Phi Alpha Delta not only gives students more information about law school, but it also helps prepare them.
“We also have people from the writing center who come in and help us write resumes. It basically takes you all the way from stage one to law school,” Wambolt said.
Kendra Winslow, also a member of Phi Alpha Delta, thinks it is a good organization to be a part of for networking purposes.
“It’s really nice to be surrounded by people who have the same interests and goals as you,” Winslow said.
Concerts and Convocations, Friday Night Fever and Student Activities Council also are organizations that were present at the event. All three organizations work together to host events and bring entertainment acts to campus for students.
“We’re trying to do about four concerts a year. So far we have Easton Corbin as well as The All-American Rejects and Boys Like Girls,” Lead Student Programmer Boyd Deuel said.
Deuel says that the organizations are trying to add more diversity to campus by bringing varying acts to campus.
“We’re a diverse campus so we need diverse acts,” Deuel said.
Friday Night Fever also holds three showings of movies on campus on Friday nights. The movies are typically hit movies that have not yet been released on DVD, Deuel said.
If students are not interested in big events, the Campus Activities Center also runs Gallery 234. The gallery showcases artwork that is submitted by students from the previous semester, according to Ashley Dallum who is in charge of selecting artwork for the gallery.
