The University of Wyoming women’s golf team placed 13th overall during its season opener at the CSU Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic, a two-day tournament that began Monday at the Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo.

Facing strong opponents, the Cowgirls shot rounds of 305 and 308 for a 613 (+37) to sit 17 strokes back of six teams on the first day. They followed up with a score of 314 on the second day to finish with a score of 927 (+63). No. 32 Texas Tech led the 17-team field at 575 (-1) on Day One and maintained its No. 1 standing on Day Two with a final score of 860 (-4), according to the Wyoming Athletics Department.

Senior Dana Zamprelli led the Cowgirls with total score of 228 (+12), ending the tournament tied at No. 35. She triple bogeyed the second hole on Day Two, but bounced back to score a 75 (+3) during the third and final round of the tournament.

UW head coach Josey Stender told the Wyoming Athletics Department she thought Zambrelli demonstrated leadership potential at the tournament.

“She had a rough start and came back and really played her game,” Stender said. “She has the talent and ability to recover. That’s something her teammates can certainly learn from her.”

Tyler Barker, a freshman Cowgirl golfer, excelled in her first performance of her collegiate career during Monday’s play, shooting two rounds of 76 (+4). The Wyoming Athletics Department marked Barker having carded five birdies to sit tied for 36th place through the first two rounds.

“I’m obviously very proud of how Tyler played today,” Stender said of Barker’s Day One performance. “She has a lot of poise on the course and is emotionally even keeled. She doesn’t let the little things bother her. Her short game was phenomenal in the first round and she just built on that confidence in the second round.”

Barker shot a 77 (+5) on her second day to tie for 39th at 229 (+13).

The University of Wyoming will play next at the UNM Dick McGuire Invitational on Monday and Tuesday in Albuquerque, N.M.
