Text alert system aids police in sexual assault arrest

The University of Wyoming Police Department arrested a man suspected of sexual assault with the help of its text message alert system Tuesday.

UWPD Chief Michael Samp  said officers arrested a man on charges of sexual battery within 10 minutes of the UW Alert text being sent.

The alleged attack took place at the UW apartments near 30th Street and Grand Avenue. The alleged victim says that the man claimed to be selling magazines and forcibly touched her inappropriately after entering her apartment.

Lindsey Haines, a student attending the University, said she encountered a man at the Grove Apartments claiming to be selling magazines on Thursday.

“The man told me he was selling magazines for his trip to Germany and pushed his way into my apartment.” Haines said. “He then continued into the apartment despite requests to leave, made inappropriate comments and then left in rage because I refused to buy what he was selling.”

A text message with the description of the alleged attacker was sent through the UW Alert system, and within 10 minutes UWPD received three phone calls with information regarding the suspect. He was arrested within two blocks of where the attack allegedly took place, Samp said. The Laramie Police Department and the Albany County Sheriff’s Office also assisted UWPD in locating the suspect. The suspect is not a UW student and is not from Wyoming.

More than 90 percent of the student population and about half of the university’s employees are signed up for the UW Alert system, which allows UWPD to warn people of potential dangers and emergencies almost immediately.
