Some people may sit and wonder what it would be like to experience things in the way that the family dog might. The question of what sets humans apart from other organisms is something that has puzzled scientists for hundreds of years.
Dr. Tyler Burge, a professor of philosophy at the University of California-Los Angeles, will explore this question at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the East Ballroom. The lecture is part of the Phi Beta Kappa’s Visiting Scholar Program and is open to the public. A reception will follow the lecture.
Dr. Burge began his teaching career in 1971. “He is the author of many articles discussing philosophy of mind, philosophy of psychology, epistemology, philosophy of language and logic, and history of philosophy,” according to his press release.
Professor Burge has been awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as the British Academy.
His visit to UW will include time to meet with philosophy, psychology and American Studies students and faculty.
