We shouldn't be bothered by bros at the gym

While reading the September 26 issue of the Branding Iron, I came across the article “Taking a look at bros at the gym” in the opinion section. While I believe that people are entitled to their own opinions, I also believe that they should keep them to themselves if it is hurtful to others. The first time I read the article I was furious. The second time I simply thought, “What gives this individual the right to discriminate against a group of individuals who are causing no harm to anyone?” Why are they worse than others who go to the gym and monopolize the equipment?

I have been to the gym on numerous occasions when these so called “bros” are lifting, and I find them a lot less irritating than others at the gym. What about the individuals who go with full makeup on, their hair down and walk on the treadmill for an hour while there are clearly others waiting? Or those who go into the cardio studio and hop on an elliptical for an hour and a half and read a magazine or a book. There are signs clearly posted about time limits when the gym is busy, but they do not pay attention, nor do they seem to care. I, for one, have been there when they are lifting, and in between their sets if you ask politely they will usually let you in to do a set as well while they are resting.

Believe it or not some of these “bros” are together for safety reasons. When using free weights, it is an absolute must to have at least two others while lifting, especially when trying to max out. If not for these “bros” or, in the fitness world spotters, then individuals would not be able to lift safely. It is imperative for two spotters to be present at all times so as to help lift the free weights to safety should the lifter become tired or unable to complete a set.

As for them walking around the gym and shaking out their muscles or standing in front of the mirror flexing, why do you care? If they are doing this, then they are obviously not hoarding the precious equipment. Therefore, if you were not so busy staring at them, you also could get your sets in. If I looked like some of these gentlemen, which is what they are, I would be proud of my accomplishments as well. What makes them flexing in the mirror any worse than a girl fixing her hair in the mirror? They are both vanity poses.

I for one am at the gym to sweat it out and leave. Maybe if others were there for the same reason we would not feel the need to compare groups at the gym.
