The Service Leadership and Community Engagement office will host its third annual Spooky Sprint canned food drive at 10 a.m. Oct. 27 in the Wyoming Union.
“The Spooky Sprint will be held on a national day of service,” Service Programs Graduate Assistant Hannah McGuire said. “We try to participate in a day of service every year, and this year the Spooky Sprint will be on ‘Make a Difference Day.’”
The Spooky Sprint is more than the average canned food drive. During the drive, participants — typically dressed in Halloween costumes — gather in groups and collect canned goods in shopping carts as they go to various households in Laramie. Participants in the Spooky Sprint will go to houses near UW’s campus.
Prior to the event, those interested in donating to the Spooky Sprint will be given bags to put their canned goods in so the donations are ready for pick up.
The SLCE office will be hosting the event in conjunction with Serve Wyoming and the STOP Violence Program.
“Both of these programs assist with victims of domestic violence, and we wanted to integrate that into this as well,” McGuire said.
What is collected will be given to the SAFE Project of Laramie, Interfaith Good Samaritan and The Soup Kitchen.
The event takes place the day of the Boise State game, but will be over in time for kickoff.
“The Spooky Sprint wasn’t planned to coincide with the football game, but we’re hoping that this will give people something to do before the game as well,” McGuire said. “We’re also hosting a mini-kickoff event after the Spooky Sprint.”
After the sprint, SLCE will provide pizza for its participants and volunteers.
“We’re trying to get the university more involved and we’re also trying to get WyoTech involved,” McGuire said.
McGuire says SLCE wants to get more involvement from the community and children are welcomed to participate in the event as well.
Those interested in participating do not have to sign up and can just show up the day of the event. Because it is close to Halloween, costumes are encouraged but are not required to participate.
Those who wish to donate for the event but do not live near the university can still do so by bringing items to the Wyoming Union or by taking them to the Laramie Main Street office on Grand Avenue.
