Abi Bever, the athlete of the week, has a plan for the future.
“I’ve always wanted to be an English teacher and I’m big on the idea of increasing literacy,” she said.
Bever, a student-athlete on the UW cross-country team, is focused on earning a bachelor’s degree in English in pursuit of that goal.
Bever came from a military family; her dad is in the Navy. She has traveled to many places and even lived in Hawaii, but she says she’s happy she came to the University of Wyoming. Bever said she likes the size and she’s close to home. Her family lives in Cheyenne, and she wanted to be closer to them.
“It’s good to add a little spice to life,” she said.
Her father, she said, always had a can-do attitude. He would wake them up early in the morning before school and have Bever and her two sisters run and lift weights.
Her father is her No. 1 fan and has helped her become the runner she is today, she said.
“He is the one that keeps me motivated and keeps me running,” Bever said.
She said her favorite part of running is being on a team and having the same goals and working towards those goals. She loves the competitive attitude and the progress. Bever also said she loves running in the rain and snow but hates running in the wind.
She loves being a leader on the team and said it helps her stay focused on the goals she sets. She wants to set a good example for the younger runners that look up to her.
Besides running, Bever enjoys writing and hopes to write children’s books. She also loves to bake, watch the Muppets and read.
“I love Shakespeare but William Faulkner is my No. 1 favorite. I think he’s more genius.”
