Students work with UW Art Museum for writing class project

The University of Wyoming Art Museum is receiving some help from two students as they finish up with a class geared towards writing to different publics.

Mollie Purcell and Lindsey Waetzig are students in English 2035: Writing for Public Forums, in which students spend the semester learning how to write to influence public opinion and work with clients. The purpose of their final project is to help clients gain notoriety for their organizations or for an event.

Purcell and Waetzig chose the UW Art Museum as their client for the project and are hoping to bring more recognition to its presence on campus.

“We’ve been learning about writing in public forums and how to communicate with different publics,” Purcell said. “We chose the art museum because I’m an art major.”

Aside from being an art major, Purcell said they chose the UW Art Museum for this project because they feel like a lot of people are unaware of it.

“I didn’t even really know about it until recently,” Waetzig said.

Purcell also said that she sees few people in the museum whenever she visits.

“Every time I go into the museum, it’s really empty, and I don’t think it’s real well-known, but there are a lot of things in there that can teach you a lot,” Purcell said.

With this project, the students are hoping to increase awareness for the art museum and hope people will continue to visit it because the exhibitions change fairly regularly, Waetzig said.

“Our project is a little different because most of the other projects involve one-time events, but our project is for something that takes place over a period of time,” Purcell said. “We really wanted to focus on the traveling art that is brought in from different artists. Visitors can go in at any time the museum is open because all the exhibitions are open to the public.”

The UW Art Museum is located at 2111 Willett Drive across from the football stadium. For a list of operating hours, visit its web site at www.uwyo.edu/artmuseum/.
