The weather outside might not be frightful and the snow may not be flying, but that does not change the fact that the holiday season has arrived.
The University of Wyoming wants to help everyone get into the holiday spirit by hosting the annual Gala Holiday Concerts. This year’s theme is “Holidays Around the World,” and will feature music from all around globe, including “Whoville.” The music selection will transport people to far off places such as the British Isles, Africa, Russia, Spain and Italy.
Other highlights of the performances include “Christmas is for Grandparents,” written by Laramie resident David Brinkman and “A Hanukah Overture” by Radio City Music Hall arranger Bob Wendel.
The show combines the UW symphony orchestra, band and all the choral groups, Michael Griffith, director of orchestral activities, said. UW Professor Larry Hensel will narrate the evening’s events and add his own unique flavor to the performances.
The Laramie High School concert choir and Plainsmen Singers, directed by Mike Hancey, will perform before the concerts in the lobby of the Fine Arts building.
Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday in the UW Fine Arts Concert Stage. Griffith suggested that people interested in seeing the show should consider the Saturday performance. “Sunday’s performance is almost sold out,” he said.
Sunday’s performance will be followed by the Symphony Associations annual Holiday Dinner at the historic Laramie Train Depot. Diners will enjoy international cuisine and even more music, and will be able to place bids during a silent auction to benefit and support the UWSO scholarship fund.
The weather does not have to be cold and blustery for people to feel the warmth of the holidays in their hearts. All they need is a little fun and festive music, and the happiness of the season will find them.
