Students itching to beat the winter funk can sign up for upcoming spring club sports as a way to overcome the negative feelings and negative temperatures.
The club sports program began at UW in 1981, when ASUW discovered they needed to create an outlet for non-traditional athletes to continue their love for sports while still providing a certain level of competition. The program has experienced many changes since its establishment. As of the year 2000, Recreation and Wellness became an official part of Campus Recreation. The department now accommodates 18 club sports with over 500 participants.
Club sports have had tremendous achievements in the past years. Sports such as hockey, cycling and Nordic skiing have all been part of their respective national championships.
In 2003, the Nordic Ski team was the women’s national champions and the men’s national runner-up. The Nordic women repeated their championship in 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2010.
The men’s Nordic team captured the national title in 2006, 2009 and 2010. In 2011, the team represented UW and the United States at the World University Games in Erzurum, Turkey.
The University has multiple club sports to offer students. Such activities for the spring semester include soccer, baseball, tennis, ultimate frisbee and badminton amongst others.
“It has helped me branch out and meet new people,” said Karlee Mivshek, a member of the women’s club soccer team. “I spent almost every weekend with my team last semester and we really bonded. It has also helped me maintain a leadership position. I am currently the vice president of the club and will get to move up next year. And of course getting to enjoy the outdoors while exercising was a plus.”
Any students interested in participating in club sports can visit the Half Acre Recreational facility for details on specific dates and how and where to sign up.
