Competing in separate meets, Wyoming’s hurdlers and distance runners enjoyed a strong Saturday at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., and the Air Force Team Challenge in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Senior Brandon Douglass tied his school record in the 60-meter hurdles with another 8.02 for the event, while Junior Jacob Edwards earned an 8.13 to move from No. 4 to No. 2 on the all-time best times list in UW history, beating his former best of 8.20. Sophomore Colin Herold tied his personal best with an 8.19, the No. 3 spot on the all-time list.
Junior Jenna Mann also beat a personal record in the women’s 60-meter hurdles, topping her former best of 8.50 with an 8.47 in the finals round. Earlier in the morning, she achieved an 8.48 in the preliminaries round. Her day was enhanced with a fifth-place finish in the long jump with an 18’-7.75” height, beating her former best of 18’-1.50.” The mark is just off the No. 10 spot of 18’-8” on the all-time UW list.
“Jenna had a great day,” said Wyoming coach Bryan Berryhill. “She’s gradually improved over the past few weeks, which is good to see heading into conference in two weeks. For her to top her best long jump mark shows she’s working hard in all areas and can be a threat for our team.”
Newcomer Sabina Sandberg continued to show her potential as she earned a 5’-7” in the high jump, which ties for the No. 8 spot on the school record list and beating her old best of 5’-6.” Audrey West performed well in the 60-meter dash, placing fifth overall with a personal-best 7.79.
In the 800-meter run, senior Olivia Heaston came in third place in 2:18.68, while Andrea Klimowski won the mile run in 5:11.21. Senior Brooke Hughes finished second in the 3,000-meter run in 10:51.97, while Emily Swigart placed fourth a few seconds later.
Finishing up the Husky Classic, men’s distance runner Garrett Zans had a great 3,000-meter run by earning an 8:17.14, moving from No. 10 to No. 5 on the all-time UW list as he beat his former best of 8:22.94 for the event.
“It was a great personal record for Garrett,” Berryhill said. “He’s been a consistent runner for us and we hope can be a strong force for us at conference.”
Taylor Gardner led the women’s 400-meter dash by placing seventh in 57.18, while freshman McKenzie Brogan finished 14th in 57.67. Freshman Kereston Thomas came in 15th in the 60-meter dash with a 7.72, second-best in her heat and three slots from qualifying for the finals round.
The 4×400 relay foursome of Diana Long, Brogan, Sam Kee and Gardner had a strong race by placing fourth in 3:49.90, a season-best mark and just off a Top 10 school time. Candace Wollert finished eighth in the 800-meter run in 2:11.50, a season-best and just off her school record by a second.
The teams compete at the Joe Davies Open in Golden, Colo., next Saturday to qualify additional athletes for the MW Indoor Championships the following week, slated for Feb. 21-23 in Boise, Idaho.
