I wish that off-campus students were more welcome to university. In some ways, it’s like they feel that if you’re not living in the dorms your first year, you should be forgotten.
Take for example, Move-In Weekend. A lot of events were set up to kick start the new school year. I wouldn’t have even gone, had they not explicitly said that off-campus students were welcome as well.
That certainly turned out not to be the case. We were to meet an RA or other person to show us to the events that day at the Union, and about three of us showed up and waited for nearly an hour, only to find nobody was sent to greet us. We had to track down a group leader and just ask to join his group for the day.
Then later that weekend, we also were unable to attend the dinner with some prestigious guests due to our not being able to enter Washakie. An email I sent to the organizers about my concerns after the first day of Move-In Weekend went without response.
Similarly during orientation, everyone was sat for dinner by which hall they would be living in. Being without a hall, I just awkwardly chose a table somewhere nearby and ate alone.Maybe in the future, students living off campus will be made more welcome.
