Indoor track team places well at conference championship

This weekend concluded the University of Wyoming’s indoor track and field season as the team competed in the Mountain West Indoor Championships in Boise, Idaho.

The Cowboys’ team finished the competition in fifth place with a total of 72 points while the Cowgirls ended the meet in eighth place with 53. New Mexico’s men’s team took the first place title home with them while San Diego State took the women’s title.

Poke competitors junior Mason Finley and senior Katy Hall stood out at the Championships leading the team.

MW reports show that Finley came in first place in the men’s shot put to provide 10 team points, throwing 65’-1.50,” over five feet farther than the second-place finisher. The mark was close to his season best of 65’-9.75,” the nation’s second-best distance for the event. Finley also received the meet’s Male Top Performance Award after placing second in the weight throw on Friday.

As for Hall, MW reports display that Hall led the women’s team placing second in the 60-meter hurdles for eight total team points with a personal best 8.51. This time beats her previous record of 8.52 from Friday.

Other performances additionally stood out over the weekend. For the Cowgirls, Junior Jenna Mann came in fifth place in the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.59 which gave the team four points. Junior Sam Kee also had an exceptional match in the women’s 400-meter dash as she placed sixth in 56.51 to provide three points. Competing alongside Diana Long, Taylor Gardner, and McKenzie Brogan in the 4×400-meter relay, Kee helped the team to another four points as the squad finished fifth in 3:45.53, UW’s fifth-best time in school history.

The Cowboy’s team also was led by Junior Garrett Zans who took third in the men’s 3,000-meter run in 8:21.15 to give the Cowboys six points, while senior Brandon Douglass took third place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.96, adding six team points. Freshman Harrison Einspahr led the men in the 60-meter dash with a fifth-place mark with 6.99 seconds for four team points.

The NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships are scheduled to be held March 8-9 and will be hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.
