The UW Cowgirls tennis team went 2-1 in meets in Lincoln, Neb. The Cowgirls shut out the Creighton Blue Jays 7-0 on Friday and went on to beat the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans 5-2 on Saturday, before being shut out themselves against the No. 15 Nebraska Cornhuskers.
After the weekend of matches concluded, the Cowgirls overall record stood at 4-3 for the spring season.
The Cowgirls had strong doubles play until the loss to the Cornhuskers, with the three pairs of senior Simona Synkova and junior Veronica Popovici, senior Sasa Nemcova and senior Alexandra Kovacs, and freshman Jessica Parizher and Silviya Zhelyazkova winning the doubles point against the Blue Jays and the Trojans.
UW also won all six of its singles matches against Creighton, and won four of six singles matches against Arkansas-Little Rock to start off a strong weekend of play. Popovici, Kovacs, Parizher and sophomore Christa Gecheva all won both of their initial matches to enter into Sunday’s matches at 2-0 in singles play.
Unfortunately, they could not keep that momentum against a highly ranked and talented Nebraska Cornhunskers squad.
The Cornhuskers dominated both the singles and doubles matches. In doubles, the pair of Synkova and Popovici lost 8-2 to the Cornhusker duo of Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova. Both the UW pairs of Kovacs and Nemcova, and Parizher and Zhelyazkova lost their matches as well. Each match ended with a final of 8-3 against Cornhusker pairs Janine Weinreich and Stefanie Weinstein, and Maggy Lehmicke and Izabella Zgierska, respectively, according to the recap of the meet by Wyoming Athletics.
Singles provided the same result for the Cowgirls, with Nebraska pulling off another clean sweep of the matches. Weatherholt, in the number one-position match, defeated Popovici 6-2, 6-2. Lehmicke defeated Nemcova 6-1, 6-2. Zgierska defeated Parizher 6-4, 6-2. Maika Zeppernick defeated Gecheva 6-3, 6-3. Kovac was able to extend the first set of her match into a tie-break, but was shut out 7-0, en route to 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 to Weinstein, according to the same report from Wyoming Athletics.
The Cowgirls have a quick turnaround, as they look to build off of a decent weekend. UW will host the University of Colorado Buffaloes Thursday at 11 a.m., followed the next day by a trip to Denver, Colo. to take on the University of Denver Pioneers at 7 p.m.
