The University of Wyoming selected its 24th president on Tuesday after a lengthy search process.
Robert J. Sternberg from Oklahoma State University will take over for current president Tom Buchanan on July 1.
“Collectively, we’ve agreed that this is the most important decision we will make during our tenure on the Board of Trustees, and every action we have taken has been made to ensure the successful outcome to this process,” Board of Trustees President Dave Bostrom said.
Chad Baldwin, the director of Institutional Communications, is also looking forward to the new president.
“I think we’re all excited that he’s coming on board,” Baldwin said. “I had a chance to meet with him the other day and I think we’ll be in good hands.”
Sternberg graduated from Yale University with a degree in psychology in 1972 followed by a doctorate degree from Stanford University in 1975. He also has 13 honorary doctorates from universities across the globe, including a Doctor of Science from St. Petersburg State University in Russia and a Doctor of Humanities from De la Salle University in the Philippines, according to the Oklahoma State University website.
He has also been the president of the Eastern Psychology Association, the American Psychology Association, and the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences.
“As president, I see my job as, first and foremost, forming, developing, and strengthening relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, diverse donors, legislators, business leaders and other key stakeholders in the state that will lead to even greater success,” Sternberg said.
Sternberg is also looking forward to making the move to Wyoming.
“For us, Wyoming is a dream come true,” he said.
