Associated Students of the University of Wyoming senators may see some internal changes regarding the responsibilities of sitting ASUW senators.
Senate Bill 2387, which was drafted by College of Agriculture and Natural Resources senator Josh Messer, was established to clarify the responsibilities of sitting ASUW Senators.
Messer wants to make sure every student is guaranteed proper representation in the Senate.
The bill states, “it is the duty of the Student Government of the Associated Students of the University of Wyoming to provide the best possible representation to the student body, whereas there is currently no explicit standard that sitting ASUW Senators must follow; and whereas this could potentially lead to poor representation within the Student Senate.”
Messer said that having a part-time student as an ASUW senator is a concern regarding student representation.
“It would be a little strange to have someone taking six credits a semester, and who wouldn’t be on campus a whole lot, representing issues for students on campus,” Messer said.
For the most part, the changes Senate Bill 2387 made are unspoken rules, but Messer wanted to adjust the rules of this ASUW legislation.
“I like getting things down on paper so that we have something concrete to refer to, should we need to do so,” Messer said.
ASUW established a solid baseline of what is expected of each senator and it allows each senator to do what they think is best.
The bill has not yet been passed. ASUW had its second and third readings and debate at its meeting last week. The senate will vote on the bill during tonight’s meeting.
