Outdoor track team readies for spring

The snow is finally clearing off the track at the Louis S. Madrid Complex, and that can only mean one thing: It is time for the University of Wyoming’s track and field team to begin its outdoor season once again.

The complex is one of the more attractive track and field venues in the Rocky Mountain region, which features an assortment of many talented athletes. During the outdoor team’s competitive season last spring, they saw a lot of success during its final four days of competition in the Mountain West Track and Field Championships. The UW team came away with All-Conference performances from 10 individuals and one relay team.

However, the men’s team only finished sixth out of the six teams in the championships with a total of 96 points, while the women’s team finished eighth out of the eight squads with 63 points.

The points that were scored on the women’s side of competition had been the highest amount scored since 2005.

Statistics from last season’s championships show that Air Force took the first place title on the men’s side followed by Boise State, New Mexico, TCU and Colorado State.

TCU took the top spot in the women’s competition followed by Colorado State, UNLV, San Diego State, Boise State, Air Force and New Mexico.

This year’s outdoor team is led by first year head coach Bryan Berryhill who comes to Wyoming after serving as CSU’s head cross country coach and assistant track coach since 2006.

Berryhill was named the 2007 Women’s NCAA Regional and Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year after the CSU women won their first-ever  team titles at the MW Conference Championships and the NCAA Mountain Region Championships in the same season.

The team will compete in the CSU Pueblo Open in Pueblo, Colo. from March 22-23 as its season’s opening meet.

Its season will continue all the way through May and may conclude as late as June if the Cowboys and Cowgirls can reach the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. June 5-8.
