1… 2… 3, 4 some crazy college kids come and knocked up on your door. Students and community members will have the opportunity to join the K.I.D.S. and have the Best Day Ever as Mac Miller, Sean Kingston and New Boyz perform in celebration of ASUW’s 100th anniversary.
The event will take place at 7 p.m., April 13 at the Arena Auditorium. The concert is sponsored by ASUW, Concerts and Convocations, and the UW Athletics Department.
After a Facebook poll and an entire week of voting, Miller fell within the top three artists. ASUW worked to secure each artist and Concerts and Convocations made sure that the artists would fit with the university atmosphere while remaining relevant to demographics of college life.
However, the choice was not necessarily all ASUW’s; finances played an important role in the decision. They wanted to make sure the artist was affordable to keep the event free for students.
“The concert contracts have been signed. On the other hand, many people do not know that when an offer is made to the artist and the artist accepts, it is a legally binding agreement,” Eric Garcia, head of Concerts and Convocations, said. “The artist will send back the contract, with any revisions, before signing of the contract takes place. In this case contracts have been signed and the advancing with managers has begun.”
ASUW waited to release the names of the artists because contracts and details needed to be finalized.
“ASUW didn’t want names to be rumored and we really wanted it to be a surprise when it was released. We accomplished this task,” Garcia said.
Miller is from Pittsburgh, Penn. In early 2010 he was signed to Rostrum Records and released his debut album, “Blue Slide Park,” in 2011. He decided on Rostrum Records because of its location in his hometown and its association with rapper Wiz Khalifa.
He began rapping at the age of 14, and has being rapping ever since. He has not always used the name Mac Miller, going by EZ Mac in 2007. Miller is known for his songs and mixtapes “Party on 5th Ave,” “All I want Is You,” “Donald Trump,” “Loud,” “Knock Knock” and “Missed Calls.”
Kingston won the award for R&B track “Beautiful Girls” in 2007 at the Teen Choice Awards. He also is known for his albums, “Sean Kingston,” “Tomorrow” and “Back 2 Life.”
New Boyz are best known for “You’re a Jerk,” “Tie Me Down,” “Better with the Lights Off,” and their feature in Hot Chelle Rae’s song “I Like It Like That.”
ASUW thought that a concert was the best way to commemorate its 100-year celebration because it was the easiest way to reach a large number of students who currently attend UW, and it is something that students would remember.
