Coming off a big victory over conference rivals Colorado State, the University of Wyoming Tennis squad will look to carry that momentum into two more conference matches.
The Cowgirls will play two matches this week in Fresno, Calif. The first match is against the Fresno State Bulldogs and the second against the Nevada Wolf Pack. The match against the Bulldogs is today at 2:30 p.m., then the Cowgirls will square off against the Wolf Pack at 10 a.m. Friday.
The Cowgirls have had a bit of a rocky season so far. Their overall record is just over .500 at 8-7, but they are 2-0 in conference play so far and 4-0 on neutral grounds, which could bode well in the Friday matchup with the Wolf Pack. UW is currently unranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association top-75 after being ranked 61st in the preseason ITA polls.
Sophomore Jessica Parizher and junior Veronica Popovici lead the Cowgirls in singles play this season. Parizher is 18-10 overall with a 10-4 record in tournament matches. She also is 8-6 in duals. Popovici has an overall record of 15-8 with a tournament record of 7-3. Her duals record stands at 8-5.
In doubles play, the pair of Popovici and senior Symona Synkova is the biggest threat for the Cowgirls. Their overall record is 19-7, including a strong 11-2 record in tournament matches. They are 8-5 in duals, and are also 8-5 against the opposing teams’ number one doubles teams.
The Fresno State Bulldogs are currently ranked 60th in the ITA polls this season, with a season record of 9-5 and a 2-0 record in the Mountain West Conference.
Senior Melissa McQueen is the standout performer for the Bulldogs in singles play. She has 19 wins overall on the season, is 9-3 in tournament play, and is 8-2 in her last 10 matches. Sophomore Anne Susdorf is riding a hot streak, as she will enter this weekends matchups with three consecutive wins. McQueen and senior Bianca Modoc are the top doubles team for Fresno State at 4-2, but are coming off a loss in their last match.
The Nevada Wolf Pack is 6-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference. They have only three players above .500 in singles play. Junior Michelle Okhremchuk is 15-5 on the year, senior Emma Verberne 11-4 and sophomore Juliette Legendre is 5-3. The top doubles team for the Wolf Pack is comprised of Okhremchuk and Verberne, which is the only pair with a winning record at 19-4 overall.
The Cowgirls will play both matches at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, Calif., and will look to stay perfect in MWC.
