The University of Wyoming’s Women’s Center will host a women’s self-defense workshop at 3 p.m. today in the Skylight Lounge in the Wyoming Union.

This will be the fourth year for the self-defense workshop and it will mostly be to create awareness for some dangers women may face. The workshop will teach some techniques that could help women defend themselves.

“It’ll mostly be about awareness, but there will be a few physical things,” Maria Almendares said.

Almendares is an office associate at the Cheney International Center and will be presenting at the workshop.

“It’ll introduce participants to a basic idea and we’ll encourage them to seek out other places that can also them self-defense,” Almendares said.

Though the workshop will be mostly for women, Almendares says can participate come to the workshop as well as it will be open to the public.

“It does not specifically say that we will keep men from participating, but we’ll definitely try to keep it at everyone’s comfort level,” Almendares said. “It will be great for men who are trying to become more aware of women’s issues.”

While the workshop will demonstrate some techniques for women to defend themselves in extreme or dangerous situations, learning these techniques will not stop with this workshop, Almendares said.

“It’ll hopefully motivate people to learn more about it and to help think about these issues on a more day-to-day basis and it will hopefully give them the skills to think about it more and give participants skills to become more aware,” Almendares said.
