The Associated Students of the University of Wyoming has gone through many changes the past couple of weeks by electing new senators and appointing new leadership.
President Brett Kahler and Vice President Kia Murdoch have a lot on their plates for this upcoming summer and academic year.
Kahler and Murdoch will be participating in a summer internship and will be busy with meetings with many different University of Wyoming departments and administrators.
One of the first big projects that ASUW will need to tackle is the student memorial project, as well as the beginning of the renovation of Half Acre Gym. ASUW will be working on securing donors to help fund the student memorial, so that the construction can hopefully begin soon.
Kahler and Murdoch also will be preparing to address a possible increase in tuition and gathering information on how students feel about the issue. ASUW will need to be prepared to take a stance one way or the other on the issue in the fall so that they can be as prepared as possible when the topic comes before the Board of Trustees.
Vice President Murdoch and President Kahler also want to continue conversations with members of the administration to see about the possibility of improving wireless Internet on campus. This is an issue that was discussed in-depth last year, so they want to be prepared to ask the state legislature for some funds to improve the wifi.
Kahler will be working with Robert Sternberg as he makes the transition to Wyoming and into his new role as UW’s new President.
“I want to make sure that we make a good impression on him so that he values the input from students throughout the duration of his presidency,” Kahler said.
ASUW has a lot to look forward to in the upcoming year, with routine events such as preparing for Homecoming in the fall, participating in orientation sessions during the summer and Kahler and Murdoch participating in their first Board of Trustees meeting at the beginning of May.
