UW employee Nicholas Christopher Muncy was arraigned yesterday and pled not guilty to five counts of theft and stolen property.
On December 6, 2013 the University Store reported a stolen Apple Mac Book Pro and iPad Air. The retail value of both items combined being $2,828.00. A coworker reported the missing merchandise and suspected Muncy of allegedly stealing the items.
After the missing Mac Book was returned on December 11, 2013, Muncy was seen on video tape working in the back room with an item where the lap top had later been recovered.
During questioning from a campus officer, Muncy admitted he “borrowed” the missing iPad and Mac Book in November 2013 and was wiping the hard drive clean before returning the laptop. Muncy also admitted to stealing five laptops from the University Store last year and pawning them off locally.
After investigation, it was uncovered there was an unsolved theft case involving five stolen laptops from the University Store. The laptops were allegedly stolen between September and December of 2012.
Under felony larceny, Muncy was placed under arrest and the stolen iPad was later recovered at his apartment. Officers also found pawn slips that stated Muncy had pawned multiple items at several local pawn shops.
After recovering a silver Apple Mac Book Pro and signed pawn slip by Muncy at Anne’s Pawn Shop, officers matched the laptop to the stolen laptop reported in April 19, 2013 by UWPD. This particular Mac Book retails for $2,599.00.
Another Mac Book of the same value was uncovered at another local pawn shop. It was reportedly pawned on October 9, 2012 and was also matched to a stolen laptop filed in the same UWPD report this past spring.
According to the judge in the arraignment, the maximum conviction of each count is ten years in prison and a fine of $10,000. Muncy could potentially face up to 50 years in prison and $50,000 in fines.
Being that Muncy plead not guilty, the arraignment was brief. The judge stated Muncy’s rights, Muncy gave his plead, and the judge set a date for the next hearing. Muncy is not currently detained and was ordered to stay near Laramie where he would be accessible.
The jury trial for the State of Wyoming versus Muncy is scheduled for April 15 and 16 and is second on the stack.
