Going into Wednesday’s home matchup, the University of Wyoming women’s basketball team was looking to bounce back from a tough road loss to San Jose. They accomplished that and then some.
The Cowgirls (12-4) defeated the Air Force Falcons 82-47, easily one of their most convincing victories of the season thus far.
“There’s something to take away from every game. Tonight I thought we executed very well,” said Cowgirls head coach Joe Legerski. “I thought our defense was very good. We had to switch sometimes. We were gapping sometimes, and I thought the players responded to what we were doing. All in all I’m pleased with this, and hopefully this gives us a shot of confidence.”
“I think we really wanted to come out this game, show that we mean business,” said senior guard Fallon Lewis. “It was good for us, and how we started things was a confidence booster.”
Junior forward Kayla Woodward led the Pokes with a career-high 29 points. Lewis also contributed in a major way, recording 14 points (12 in the first half) and 11 rebounds—her sixth double-double this season. Jasmine Davis contributed a career-high 11 points as well.
“I thought Fallon (Lewis) got us off to a great start,” said Legerski. “Kayla was consistent tonight as well.”
The Cowgirls wasted no time early in the game, quickly going up 12-0 on an Air Force squad that struggled to find any kind of offense early. The Falcons managed to find ways to score after that, but never truly found their way into the contest and went into halftime down 20.
Lewis proved to be the strongest point of the Pokes’ lineup in the first half, recording a double-double within the first 20 minutes of the game.
Wyoming picked up right where they left off once play resumed, and scored nine of the first 12 points of the half to extend their lead to 46-21. From there, Air Force made attempts to shrink the Wyoming lead, but failed.
The Pokes made an overwhelming 12-2 run midway through the second half to bury the Falcons. By the final 10 minutes of the contest, Legerski was putting in his bench.
Air Force was held to 47 points in the game, a new season low for the Cowgirls.
“I was just happy with the way we played and executed,” said Legerski.
