LARAMIE – The U.S. Bank on 3rd Street was robbed yesterday. The criminal is at large and believed to be armed.
Around noon yesterday a person wearing a gray vest-like sweater, black-rimmed glasses, a generic looking cap and a glued on mustache walked into the U.S. Bank at 568 N. 3rd Street.
Holding a pistol, the person walked up to the teller and showed her the pistol grip. After securing an undisclosed amount of money, the robber left on foot, having never directly pointed the weapon at anyone.
Police were notified of the robbery at 12:03 yesterday afternoon. Coincidentally, at least one Laramie Police Officer was driving down 3rd Street at that time, only blocks away from the bank robbery in progress.
After being informed of the robbery, the nearby officer responded to the scene. But by the time the officer arrived, the suspect had already fled. Based off the press release, the officer must have missed the robber by minutes if not seconds. Police say nobody was hurt.
The bank robbery yesterday may have been something like a pit stop for the suspect who got away, Commander Mitchell Cushman of the Laramie Police Department speculates.
“It’s possible a suspect or suspects are driving east on I-80, robbing banks along the way, but that’s just a theory based on the circumstances,” Cushman said.
Just last week a U.S. Bank in Rock Springs was robbed. The suspect of that robbery matches the description of the Laramie robbery yesterday. The suspect also matches the description of a number of recent robberies in Utah. Police believe there may be a connection.
“It’s only a possibility, but the situations look similar,” Cushman said.
The suspect is now wanted for Aggravated Bank Robbery, a felony, and could face a prison sentence of up to 25 years.
The suspect has been described as a 20 to 30-year-old white male or female, weighing approximately 120 to 130 pounds. The investigation is ongoing.
