The Mountain West Conference announced Monday morning that Wyoming sophomore guard Josh Adams has been given a one-game suspension for “striking an opponent.”
Adams was ejected from Saturday’s win over Utah State with less than six minutes to play in the second half for reportedly striking a Utah State player.
He will now be restricted from playing in Wednesday’s matchup against the New Mexico Lobos.
Adams is currently second on the Pokes squad in scoring, averaging 12.1 points per game thus far this season. He leads also leads the team in assists.
According to a story published on trib.com, Wyoming assistant coach Jeremy Shyatt said that Wyoming basketball stands by the Mountain West’s decision.
Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman echoed Shyatt’s sentiments.
“Our teams are committed to good sportsmanship and the sportsmanship standards established by the Mountain West Conference,” Burman said. “We know Josh is disappointed in his actions late in the game on Saturday versus Utah State, and he is disappointed that his actions will cause him to miss this Wednesday’s game at New Mexico.”
Adams took to his twitter to state his feelings on the suspension saying in a tweet Monday morning, “Bummed out but respect and support the verdict…my apologies cowboys.”
Wyoming guards Jerron Granberry, Charles Hankerson Jr. and Trey Washington are all likely substitutes for Adams in the starting lineup for Wednesday’s game.
Junior forward Larry Nance Jr. also voiced his opinion after the suspension was announced via twitter, tweeting, “All of this is added motivation which is scary for a team like us to have…We’ll be fine. We’ll be just fine.”
