Wyoming’s Track and Field team defeated Montana State during this weekend’s Powder River Dual, winning 21 of 28 events.
Both teams defeated Montana by double-digit margins. The Cowboys finished the meet with 11 event victories for a score of 89-61 and the Cowgirls won 10 events, beating the Bobcats 86-64.
The Cowgirls had three members with two first place victories; senior Jenna Mann, junior Shreese Daniels and sophomore Kereston Thomas.
Mann finished first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.58 and the long jump at 18-7. Daniels won the shot put with a throw of 46-7 ¼ and the weight throw with 62-8 Thomas won the 60-meter dash in 7.61 and the 200-meter in 24.59.
In her first collegiate meet, freshman Kerry White placed second in the 800-meter with a time of 2:13.38. White’s time in the 800-meter is sixth all-time in Cowgirl history.
“I thought it was a total team effort today,” said head coach Bryan Berryhill to gowyo.com. “On paper it should have been a lot closer, but we went in with a lot of fight and won a lot more events than I thought we would. There weren’t really any holes out there for us today. We had a lot of mental errors and things we didn’t do well last weekend, so to see them bounce back and put forth that kind of effort today says a lot about where they are mentally.”
Four Cowboys improved their personal-bests during the Powder River Dual.
Junior Kyle Sullivan won two events the high jump at 6-2 ¾ and the pole vault with his personal-best 12/11 ½. Sophomore Tyler Anderson also set his own personal-best, placing first in the weight throw at 65-11. Anderson’s throw improved by over a foot from last weekend’s meet, he is now ranked 21st in the nation for weight throw.
Junior Aaron Derner and senior Garret Zans both set new personal-best as well. Derner ran a personal-best of 8:14.38 in the 3,000-meter, putting him in fourth place. Zans also ran the 3,000-meter in 8:14.50, setting a new personal-best and earning him fifth place.
The Wyoming Track and Field team will compete at the Husky Classic in Seattle and the Don Kirby Collegiate in Albuquerque, N.M. this weekend.
