The Wyoming Cowgirls tennis team improved to 2-1 in the spring season with a resounding 7-0 victory over Colorado Mesa on Friday evening in Laramie. The matchup was the teams only home contest this month.
Wyoming (2-1) took a quick 1-0 lead over Colorado Mesa (4-1) in the doubles as all three pairs won convincingly.
This success carried over to the singles as all the Cowgirls won all six matches.
“Today was another step forward for our team,” said head coach Dean Clower. “All week we have been very professional in our practices and coming to work each day to get better. Our fans are the absolute best and we broke another record with over 300 fans today.”
In the doubles the Cowgirls’ number one tandem of senior Veronica Popovici and junior Jessica Pairizher took down the Maverick duo of Natalie Martin and Kaylee Davis, 8-2.
The young Wyoming pairing of freshman Dorottya Jonas and redshirt freshman Alena Vasileva defeated Colorado Mesa’s Shannen McNamara and Kristyn Wykert, 8-3.
Finally, the Cowgirls’ team of junior Christa Gecheva and junior Alma Espinosa beat the Colorado Mesa team of Emily Dodson and Katie Metz, 8-2, to clinch the doubles point for the home squad.
In singles action, Popovici yet again shined, defeating Martin 6-0, 6-3. Jonas overcame Davis in two sets, 6-0, 6-2. Parizher also added to the Cowgirls sweep in straight sets, topping McNamara 6-0, 6-0. In the fourth slot, Gecheva defeated Wykert 6-0, 6-1.

The duo of Gecheva and Espinosa improved to 5-3 in the doubles.
