UW students are not the only ones being graded. Deans get grades, too. And not always good ones
Their grades come in the form of an evaluation, the 5-Year Review.
Until last Tuesday, evaluations for Business Dean Brent Hathaway and Engineering Dean Khaled Gasem could be accessed online.
But not anymore.
UW took those evaluations down Tuesday afternoon, when the Branding Iron requested reviews for the remaining deans.
During a phone conversation, Vice President for Academic Affairs Maggie Murdoch said she was previously unaware that the reviews were online, and she said they must have been posted by mistake.
Murdoch said she contacted UW legal upon notification and was advised to take it down, citing a personnel violation.
Prior to the reports’ removal, the Branding Iron downloaded Dean Hathaway’s evaluation.
Overall, the report states that “Dean Hathaway is a successful leader for the College of Business and the University of Wyoming.”
However, it’s not all positive.
The report also indicates that Hathaway’s extensive travel is a cause for concern in the college, with faculty members requesting that the dean’s travels be more transparent.
Because of his frequent absences, some faculty and staff reported feeling that Hathaway is “disengaged from operations of the college.”
The report also points to dissatisfaction among department heads who want more involvement in the college’s decision-making process.
And finally, faculty and staff complain about and seek better communication.
A review committee generated the report from various interviews they conducted with faculty, staff, deans and students from the college.
