Wyoming used a three-headed scoring attack to eclipse the hundred mark and beat the San Jose State Spartans 103-80 on Saturday afternoon in the Arena Auditorium.
“I’m exhausted and I didn’t even have to get up and down the court,” said head coach Joe Legerski. “The pace to that game was unbelievable.”
The Cowgirls were led by junior forward Kayla Woodward who recorded a double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Fallon Lewis also earned a double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Rounding out the double-figure scorers for Wyoming was junior guard Kaitlyn Mileto with 24 points.
“Kayla, Kaitlyn, and Fallon, they go out and do what they do,” said Legerski. “Words cannot describe what they were able to accomplish tonight.”
The Cowgirls owned an 18 point halftime lead at 59-31. That lead swelled to 20 at the 14:34 mark. In just two minutes though, San Jose State was able to go on an 8-0 run to pull within 12.
“I thought they had all the momentum at the 12 minute mark,” said Legerski.
“We knew they weren’t going to go away,” added Mileto.
Wyoming and San Jose State battled for a while before the Cowgirls were able to open up a 20 point lead again and put the Spartans away with 5:32 to play.
The Cowgirls out-rebounded the Spartans 51 to 40. Wyoming also had 25 assists on 34 of their made baskets.
“25 assists on 34 baskets that’s how the Cowgirls play,” said Legerski.
Other than notable Cowgirl performances were turned in by sophomore guard Marquell Dent who scored nine points and dished out ten assists in just 20 minutes of play. Sophomore guard Chelan Landry also chipped in with five assist.
“I thought Chelan played very well,” said Legerski. “Marquelle also comes with a point of a double-double and only plays 20 minutes.”
A crowd of nearly 4,000 fans took in the game, many of them sporting pink T-shirts to raise awareness for breast cancer.
“It was a great atmosphere they provide us with,” said Lewis. “They know when to give us energy and get us going.”
The Cowgirls will take to the road and be back in action on Wednesday when they play Fresno State at 8 p.m.
“We have to take the momentum from all these games and keep our run going,” said Woodward. “Its hard to play there.”
This is a critical game for Wyoming as Fresno State trails the Cowgirls by half a game for third place in the Mountain West standings.
