The Wyoming Cowgirls were tied for fourth, scoring 65 points after day one of the Mountain West Championships in San Antonio, Texas.
The Cowgirls are tied with New Mexico at 65 points and are trailing third place San Diego State by 15 points after day one. Everyone is chasing Nevada with 107 points. Boise State sits in second at 88 points.
The fifth place team, Colorado State, only trails Wyoming by one point going into Thursday’s events.
Day one swimming events included the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay. The one meter springboard event also took place on Wednesday.
The one meter springboard kicked off the meet and this saw Cowgirl senior Amanda Fay place seventh with a score of 272.52 earning Wyoming 12 points. Sophomore Kari Campbell finished in fourteenth place adding 3 points to the UW score.
The swimming portion of the meet got started with the 200-medley relay. The Cowgirl team of senior Morgan Hartigan, senior Stephanie Young, sophomore Molly Coonce and sophomore Emily Ridout clocked in with a time of 1:40.07, earning them 26 points and a sixth place finish.
Wednesday night was capped off with the swimming of the 800-freestyle relay. The Wyoming relay composed of junior Claudia Carlson, sophomore Keara Chang, senior Leah Roesler and junior Jordan Denny set the second fast time in school history at 7:20.25 and finished seventh earning UW 24 points.
Several individual time trials were completed on Wednesday. These time trials included the 200-yard backstroke, the 200-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard fly and the 50-yard freestyle.
Thursday opened with the 200-free relay followed by the three meter springboard. The rest of the day was filled with individual races such as 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley and finishing off the evening with the 50-yard freestyle.
Thursday morning is filled with prelims of individual events including the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, and the three meter springboard.
The meet will run through Saturday evening.
This will be the end of the season for many of the Cowgirl swimmers but a select few will be back in the pool at the NCAA Championships in March in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The men will be in San Antonio next week to compete in the Mountain West Championships starting on Wednesday.
