Last night’s ASUW meeting addressed proposals to raise tuition and increases in student fees. Guest speakers Sara Axelson, Vice President of Student Affairs and Bill Mai, Vice President of student administration, came to talk to senators about the proposal for tuition and fees that will go to the board of trustees. The tuition increase is to support the increase in staff and faculty salary by 4 percent next fall. This will also help keep up with the demands of libraries and IT.
“This plan will be modern and affordable,” said Mai. “ There are a number of challenges though from a funding standpoint.”
The senators also discussed the following:
-Bill #2416 on Formal Elimination of Outreach Presentation for ASUW Senators
-Bill# 2417 on Establishment of a Judicial Council Liaiso.n
-ASUW approved of two RSO funding board requests, and failed one.
-$6,787 dollars was allocated to the Muslim Student Association for their Islamic Awareness Week. This will take place April 7-13 and will have a variety of events that will showcase the culture, food, and activities associated with Muslims.
-$3,650 was given to the Celebrate Nepal event. This will promote the Nepal culture through guest speakers and other activities.
– The failed request was for $1,280 for the associated students interested in China. The senators agreed that with more time to structure the event, the request would pass. The proposed plan was for a Chinese creative writing competition with a award for scholarship money.
-President Kahler addressed his close work with the current elections for ASUW senators with the amended elections code. Kahler also met with others to fund the childcare scholarship next week.
-Senators discussed the success of the legislative trip to Cheyenne that they went on last week.
-Panhellenic discussed their successful recruitment for the spring.
-Vice President Murdoch attended a meeting for the bookstore renovation. The store will remain open during the construction.
-The new for spot on campus, Rendezvous, did not reportedly hurt other restaurants around campus with opening, with the exception of Panda Express. According to Murdoch, “They need a break occasionally though,” he said. “They are always busy.”
The meeting ended with a reminder that prospective senators can print off applications for the next ASUW year on the ASUW website.
