The University of Wyoming track and field squad competed in Laramie on Friday in the Rocky Mountain Classic on the Hager-LeBar Indoor Track, and during the competition, senior Mason Finley broke the school shot put record for the second time this season with a throw of 66-3 1/4.
Finley previously held the school and facility record at 66-0 ¼, which he threw in December during Wyoming’s Power Meet.
His efforts paced the Cowboys to victories in eight of 10 events.
Sophomore Scott Carter also impressed in the triple jump at 51-3 ¾, topping his old personal-best by more than two feet.
The Cowgirls were led by junior Shreese Daniels, who won the weight throw with a toss of 67-3 1/4, en route to victories in seven of 10 events.
“Mason and Shreese have both been working on some technical things in practice and they hit it today,” Wyoming head coach Bryan Berryhill said. “Scott has been a little dinged up, but we’ve seen that in practice and knew he had it in him. Today he just went for broke each time down the runway and was rewarded with a great mark.”
The Cowboys earned further victories from junior Colin Herold in the 55-meter hurdles at 7.51 and sophomore Harrison Einspahr in the 55 meters at 6.43. Junior Jason Roascio won the 300-meter dash at 36.42.
Freshman Garrett Westlake, running unattached, won the mile in 4:22. Junior Kyle Sullivan won the high jump at 6-2 3/4. Sophomore Tyler Anderson rounded out the Cowboys’ champions with a first-place finish in the weight throw at 63-2 ¼.
The Cowgirls victories included wins from senior Jenna Mann in the 55-meter hurdle at 7.89 and sophomore Kereston Thomas in the 55 meters at 6.43. Mann also won the long jump at 18-3 ¼. Sophomore Sabina Sandberg tied a season-best of 5.5 to win the high jump and Senior Natalie Hurst won the 300 meters at 41.75.
Sophomore Catherine Cloetta ran the mile in 5:16 to secure a victory.
“We knew going in that our field events would be the highlight of this meet and we had big performances by a couple kids,” Berryhill said. “I liked the energy of our team today. A small meet like this a week before the conference meet can sometimes be flat, but we brought a lot of energy today and that will set them up well heading into next weekend.”
The Wyoming track and field team continues its season at the 2014 Mountain West Indoor Championships on Thursday at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
