The Wyoming Cowgirls swimming and diving team finished fourth in the Mountain West Championship this past weekend in San Antonio, Texas.
The Cowgirls finished with 455 points. Boise State ended up taking the Mountain West crown convincingly, with a team score of 735, which was more than 100 points ahead of the second place team, San Diego State, who had 633 points. Nevada came in third with 507 points.
This marked the eighth consecutive time coach Tom Johnson has finished fourth or higher at the Mountain West Championships.
The highlight of the weekend was senior Morgan Hartigan who broke the school record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.77. She was not done breaking school records as she was part of the 400-yard freestyle relay, which also broke a school record with a time of 3.19.67, placing them fourth.
Accompanying Haritgan in the relay was junior Melanie McDonough, sophomore Emily Ridout and junior Jordan Denny.
The swimmers were not the only ones breaking records as a couple Cowgirl divers also broke school records.
Sophomore Kari Campbell broke the school record in the platform with a score of 234.96, placing her in fourth. Senior Amanda Fay, who placed behind Campbell with a seventh place finish, also broke the record with a score of 229.23.
There were a couple notable finishers in the 200-yard butterfly as junior Claudia Carlson touched second with a time of 1:59.38. Senior Leah Roesler was not far behind finishing fifth with a time of 1:59.78.
The 200-yard breaststroke saw some quick times as well. Junior Halie Lacey clocked in at 1:59.38 earning her an eighth place finish. Sophomore teammate Molly Coonce placed eleventh with a time of 2:16.32.
Moving to the distance race of the 1,650-freestyle saw a few Cowgirls reel in fast times. Sophomore Nicole Hlavacek raced to a fifth place finish with a time 16:37.57. Junior Aliyah Mikulski touched with a time of 16:56.22. Finally, sophomore Emma Dow clocked in at 17:01.22.
Wyoming set 6 school records in all, Hartigan and Campbell claimed two a piece and the Cowgirl 400-freestyle relay claimed another.
The Cowgirls will now wait and see if any of their times qualified them for the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. next month.
Both Wyoming divers qualified for the NCAA Zone “E” Diving Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. on March 13.
The men’s team will take to the pool starting Wednesday when they compete in the WAC Championships in Palo Alto, California.
