Wyoming recorded a season-low offensive performance in a 59-43 to Texas A&M on Wednesday night in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational. The loss marks the end of the Cowboys’ season.
“It’s a shame the season had to end with one of our poorest games, but kudos to Texas A&M and how they played tonight,” said University of Wyoming head coach Larry Shyatt. “I know our kids are disappointed with this poor showing, but we are headed in the right direction. We have some good years ahead of us with some of the pieces that we have in place.”
Wyoming fell behind big early, down as much as 17 on four different occasions in the first half.
The second half was much of the same. After sophomore guard Josh Adams opened the scoring with a three, the Cowboys never got within 17 until freshman guard Trey Washington made the final shot of the game.
Wyoming finished the game shooting just 30 percent from the field, 21 percent from three and 83 percent from the charity stripe.
Texas A&M shot 39 percent from the floor, 33 percent from deep and 83 percent from the free-throw line.
Senior guard Jerron Granberry led the Pokes’ scoring effort with 10 points. No other Wyoming player scored in double figures.
Adams’ streak of four consecutive games of 20 points or more ended on Wednesday, as he only recorded five points.
Junior forward Kourtney Roberson recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. His front-court mate sophomore Antwan Space also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Off the bench senior guard Fabyon Harris chipped in 11 points.
The Cowboys turned the ball over 15 times and were out-rebounded 41-27.
Wednesday was the final collegiate game for Granberry and fellow senior guard Nathan Sobey.
In an interview after the game, Shyatt stated he has another scholarship to use in the off-season to try and get another commit. Wyoming already has three verbal commitments for next year and with only two graduating seniors and a redshirt freshman transferring, it is not yet apparent where another scholarship will come from.
It is possible that redshirt junior guard Charles Hankerson Jr. is going to be kicked off the team after his suspension. Whatever the reason may be, the Cowboys have a scholarship to fill.
The Cowboys can go a few different routes with this scholarship. They could go after a junior college transfer, a high school senior or even another transfer.
Wyoming finished the 2013-2014 season 18-15 overall and sixth in the Mountain West Conference.
