ASUW met for this term’s penultimate meeting in the Senate Chambers last night. Discussion encompassed the coming general elections and the senators’ end of the year commitments. The meeting proceeded as usual with approval of the past week’s minutes.
President Kahler announced there are seven office work days remaining before the new incumbency. He spoke about items he wishes to complete before the ending of his term.
The freshmen senate reported Brooke Nisley has been voted as freshmen senator of the year.
According to the election committee, this election year has been record breaking with over 2000 primary votes and numerous candidate applications. The hope is to break the general election voting record as well. Voting for the general election will begin this Monday at 12:01 a.m.
The RSO Funding Board approved $1,360 for the PC Gamers for their upcoming tournament prize budget. Before coming to this decision, senators spent a lengthy amount of time debating over what constitutes a gift or prize and whether additional money should be spent on them.
The meeting then moved into new business, where eight bills had their first reading. Bill #2429 would require senators to receive diversity training as part of their senatorial duties and accountability standards. Nominations were also taken for ASUW official and SAL of the year.
Announcements included the MS walk this Saturday starting at 9 a.m. and the Stand up for Freedom event that is taking place today until midnight. President Kahler also encouraged senators to campaign for students to vote yes for changes to the Constitution.
The meeting concluded with a suggestion for a special meeting to discuss unheard legislation before the 2013-2014 terms are finished.
