Review: Adam Mamawala is witty comedy

mamawalaLaughs echoed throughout the room, guts clenching in pain from the consistent chuckling. After the stress of pre-finals week, students sought after a much-needed release.

Comedian Adam Mamawala visited the University of Wyoming for a show last Friday night and delivered a great performance.

Recently named in Funny or Die’s Top “30 Under 30 Comedians to Watch,” along with an appearance on an episode of MTV’s “Girl Code,” Mamwala is not afraid of the spotlight.

As the venue filled to the brim with young and old alike, Mamawala was a prepared hit from the beginning. His performance incorporated a huge range, from common comedic themes and truly original material. From airport security, ethnicity, differences between generations and technology, his common themes delivered an interpretation of the material as clever and witty.

Mamawala’s intelligence was spot on for reaching the range of people in the audience. His show incorporated audience interaction as well. The whole crowd was drawn in when asked what “drinking card games” were played in Laramie. There was a long silence before one brave audience member yelled out, “We just drink!” Laughter ensued, after which the show quickly picked back up.

The show hit a high note when Mamawala pulled out an ad for a lost cat that he, presumably, carries around with him. The page was worn and frail. He read aloud the ad claiming “Felix”, the lost cat, was a skinny, large-boned cat. The ad was an example of political correctness gone awry, causing a veritable uproar from the audience at the hilarious extended joke.

The show, overall, was a huge success. Jessi Johnson and Kelli Niemeyer, students at the University of Wyoming, left impressed with the talented Mamawala.

Johnson, a Political Science major, thought the show was “super funny” and “very quirky.”

“We came here on the spur of the moment,” Johnson said.

“I’m glad we did,” Niemeyer, a Physiology major, chimed in.

The spectators weren’t the only ones enjoying the show. After the show, Mamawala expressed his love for traveling to colleges to perform.

“Colleges are a lot of fun,” Mamawala said. “As a young man, I love the travel, even though I didn’t get to stay for long to see Laramie.”

Mamawala has also visited 150 colleges in over 30 states. His experience showed at the university’s Friday Night Fever event, not only through the passion and fun Mamawala brought to the stage, but within the smiles and chatter of the pleased audience members exiting the event. Mamawala’s brand of intelligent comedy was a hit.
