“Are you ready to change the world?” asked Eric Ogle, former ASUW senator from the College of Engineering, to the newly elected members at last night’s ASUW inauguration.
New members of ASUW were sworn in as fresh faces looked hopeful for the upcoming year.
Ogle delivered a speech, sharing how ASUW has changed his life and asked the new senators to make a list of five goals they want to accomplish by the end of next year.
“In 12 months, ask yourself, ‘Did I accomplish what I set out to do?’” said Ogle. “If you accomplish every single thing, that’s going to make you who you are.”
The meeting went on to elect senators to fill certain positions. Senators elected others and debated reasons they were the best person for the position.
Senator Josh Messer was elected to fill the position of President Pro Tempore; Senator Daniel Kerbs was elected as Parliamentarian; Senator Ruiqi Yang was elected as Sergeant in Arms and Senator Chris Ryan was elected as Marshall.
The position of Chief of Staff is still looking to be filled. The Chief of Staff is the head executive position whose main responsibility is to ensure everyone is doing their job, said President Ahmed Balogun.
After the members of ASUW applauded for the newly elected positions, the meeting went on to familiarize the newer senators with the usual business.
New Vice-President Ricardo Lind-Gonzales ran the meeting efficiently and seemed at home in his new position, as did Balogun.
“I am just taking it one day at a time,” said Balogun. “It is definitely exciting to be in this position to serve students.”
“The big thing right now is to talk with the administration and to understand how they can support us to accomplish our goals,” said Balogun.
Balogun said he does not see any radical changes happening to ASUW in the future, but he would like to see more voices on the table.
