The Wyoming Department of Transportation said last week that University of Wyoming football fans traveling to this weekend’s game in Laramie might encounter travel delays. East of Laramie on Interstate 80, the Remount Interchange Bridge is being worked on and a mill and overlay is in progress on I-80 between the Otto Road and Round Top interchanges.
“Driving out of Cheyenne there was no construction until 10 miles out. Once that started for about five miles it was down to one lane. The other lane was completely gone due to all the construction,” said Rob Berger, a Cowboy football fan
from Cheyenne. “There were a total of nine cars in front of mine on the way to Laramie. Three were pulling things like trailers, motor homes and things like that. Because of all that, it took some time to get here and at one point we were only going 40-50 mph.”
The route from Cheyenne to Laramie was not the only one riddled with construction on game day. West of Laramie, a mill and overlay is in progress between the Curtis Street and Herrick Lane Interchanges.
Much further west of Laramie is a mill and overlay in progress near Sinclair. In both lanes, the speed limit is reduced to 45 mph during the day and 65 mph the rest of the time.
Berger said that the traffic was especially slow, though it was unclear if the congestion was due to Labor Day travelers or commuting fans.
“You know I-80 is usually busy but this was slow even for that and it was also Labor Day so it is hard to determine whether the slow going was due to a lot of people going to the game or just trying to get out of town for the holiday,” said Berger.
