Golf Cowboys improve in Colorado

ON Wallen

Cowboy Golf finished 11th at the Gene Miranda Invitational this past weekend in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“The young team is doing great,” Head coach Joe Jensen said.  “We are doing tremendously good things and I am pleased.”

Sophomore Ryan Wallen led the Cowboy team, which finished with a score of 885 (21-over).  Wallen finished in a tie for 32nd carding a three-round score of 220 (4-over).

Wallen opened with a 73 (1-over) on Saturday.  He followed that opening round up with score 72 (even) and a final round score of 75 (3-over).

“I like the way he competed,” said Jensen.  “There is nothing flashy with him.  He is a solid, steady player.”

Coming in second for the Cowboys was Freshman Drew McCullough who tied for 38th with a score of 221 (5-over).  McCullough finished strong with a final round score of 69 (3-under).  Prior to that he carded rounds of 80 (8-over) and 72 (even).

According to Jensen, McCullough hits his driver about 320 yards and on the final round his driver was a big reason, along with his wedges, as to why he shot a 69 (3-under).

Right along side of McCullough was freshman teammate Glenn Workman who also shot a 221 (5-over).  Workman started the invite off with an opening round 70 (2-under), but he struggled the next two rounds with scores of 75 (3-over) and 76 (4-over).

Last weeks’ low Cowboy, Freshman Quintin Pope, was next in line on the team.  Pope carded a score of 225 (9-over), which put him in a tie for 54th.  Pope carded an opening round 75 (3-over) but then struggled in round two in route to a 79 (7-over) and then closed the weekend shooting a 71 (1-under).

Playing as an individual and also finishing tied for 54th with a score of 225 (9-over) was Senior Cameron Lindell, who fired an opening round 77 (5-over).  Lindell followed that up with 72 (even) before finally finishing with a 76 (4-over).

Also playing as an individual was Freshman Arron Lickteig who finished 80th with a score of 235 (19-over).  Lickteig shot matching 80s (8-over) on his opening and closing rounds while firing a second round 75 (3-over).

Rounding out the team scoring for Wyoming was Junior Kamrin Allen who carded a 239 (23-over) which was good enough for a tie for 83rd.  Allen opened with a 78 (6-over) and closed with rounds of 79 (7-over) and 82 (10-over).

Allen usually is near the top finishers for Wyoming but a couple situations hurt Allen’s score.  According to Jensen, Allen accidentally hit his ball during a practice swing and on another occasion mistakenly played an opponent’s ball.

“He is pressing as all athletes do,” said Jensen.  “He just had a bad weekend.  It happens.”

Taking home the first-place trophy was UNLV with a team score of 838 (26-under).  Colorado placed second and was four shots behind the Rebels with a score of 842 (22-under).  Rounding out the top three was Colorado State who finished up with a score of 856 (8-under).

Taylor Montgomery, a sophomore from UNLV took home the individual crown with a score 206 (10-under).  Every round he carded was under par highlighted by a second round of 65 (7-under).  There was a tie for second between UNLV’s Aj McInerney, junior, and Colorado Sophomore Yannik Paul who both shot a 207 (9-under).

The Cowboys will travel to Fort Collins, Colo. next weekend for the Ram Master Invitational.

“We are going to put Air Force behind us and focus on CSU,” said Jensen.  “This course (CSU) is an old property, its tree-lined and you must keep the ball in play.”
