The homecoming dance is one of the biggest parts of the homecoming celebration; next to the homecoming football game.
For the third consecutive year the Cowboy Country Swing Club is responsible for assisting with the homecoming dance. The dance is being put on by the Student Activities Council (SAC), but the Cowboy Country Swing Club (CCSC) will provide swing lessons.
Richie Law & the Southern Routes Band will be performing live during the dance, which will start at 9 p.m.
“Cowboy Country Swing Club will be teaching swing dancing from eight to nine in the Union Ballroom where the dance will be held,” said CCSC Vice President Hunter Perala, a junior studying kinesiology. Perala believes that with the live band performing it will make for a great atmosphere and the students attending can interact with the musicians, which is something they would not be able to accomplish through a usual playlist on an iPod.
Richie Law & the Southern Routes Band is an exciting addition to the homecoming dance since there usually is not a live band performing, said Perala. The band consists of five members including: Richie Law, Chuck Lawson, Chris Williams, Tim Pierce and Phil Nadeau. Some of the members have been involved with some well-known acts. Richie Law comes from Nashville and is a recording artist who has been able to work with some famous country acts like Darius Rucker.
“Richie Law & the Southern Routes provide a great show that we are very excited to get to dance to,” said Perala.
The CCSC is a club that offers lessons on swing dancing that takes place every Thursday evening.
“We have a positive atmosphere, so it makes for a good safe place for an awesome time. Because of this the homecoming dance will have a fun and safe environment for all students,” said Perala. This year the club hit a record attendance when 400 people attended one of the earlier meetings.
Although the CCCSC is running the dance, students do not have to know how to swing dance or have the desire to know how. Anyone and everyone are welcome to join in on the fun of the homecoming dance. Perala went on to say that University of Wyoming students could look forward to a stress relieving experience that they can come to and get excited for the University of Wyoming’s homecoming.
Homecoming week can be an exciting time for university students and the dance seems to be the catalyst of this excitement for some students.
“I’m mostly excited to meet new people and get involved in more university-related activities,” said Abbie Nordyke, a freshman studying nursing. Nordyke believes that the swing dance lessons offered will make it easier for her to branch out and meet more people, “I love swing dancing!”
Swing dance lessons started at eight o’clock with the dance following at nine o’clock in the Union Ballroom.
