Tuesday, Oct. 21 was a historic day for Laramie, as the Albany County Courthouse issued its first marriage license to a same-sex couple.
At 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Linda Mahaffey and Teresa Bingham received a marriage license, becoming the first lesbian couple in the county to do so.
“We’re going to go down in history and somewhere, someone will care,” Mahaffey said.
The Albany County Courthouse was filled with supporters of the event. Cheers rang out through the halls as the couple stood up after receiving their license.
“We’re getting our license so we can get married this summer,” Mahaffey said, “We just wanted to get our license now.”
Mahaffey said that the anticipation of receiving a marriage license kept her up all night. “I had a hard time sleeping,” she said. Mahaffey said she spent the night thinking about what she would say while participating in such a historical moment.
“Now we don’t have to feel like a second class citizen, we’ll be able to go along with everybody else,” Mahaffey said.
