Angel Adams and the Suits donned their brass and stringed instruments as they serenaded a unique community in Laramie that came together for social swing dancing.
Friday night, the band played at Blossom Yoga for Swinging Around Town, a local series of swing dances that help show different venues around town while teaching the public how to swing dance and getting people moving.
Swinging Around Town played in many venues already including Cowgirl Yarn, Boomers Barbeques, and Lincoln Community Center.
“It’s an effort to bring social swing dance to the Laramie community so we’ are trying to teach people how to dance in any venue, but specifically to swing dance. It’s a really fun and energetic kind of dance. It gets people dancing, moving and checking out local businesses,” a coordinator for Swinging Around Town Kevin Bretting said. “As long as we can continue this event, we will. It’s a donation funded event and were just trying to plant some seeds, get people dancing and get a social dance community.”
Angel Adams and the Suits is a local music group that is comprised of many university student-musicians. Making up the band is Angel Adams playing the saxophone, flute and vocal work;Julian Saporiti on the guitar, mandolin and vocals; Thomas Oakley on the tuba; David Ginger with the Sousaphone; Jeff Worrall playing the trumpet or flugelhorn;and Jesse Winecoff as the drummer.
“We have a couple of original pieces made by members of the band. We really like blues, Dixie land style and just music that fits the instrumentation,” Angel Adams said. “My favorite part of playing a live venue are the people. Especially at the swing dances, everyone is engaged and learning how to dance and I was just happy to be there.”
The band played from 7p.m. to 9 p.m. as people danced around the yoga studio. At the end of their set they paraded out of the yoga studio.
“I like swing dancing, it’s a classy bunch of folks they know how to tear up a dance floor,” Peter Skorcz, a senior Nursing Major said. “I say come check it out, they can teach you a move here and there and the best part about it is no one can tell you don’t know how to dance so you can just wing it. No judgment. It’s a great bunch and a fantastic band.”
