An exhibit that showcases the works of University of Wyoming’s very own Jon Young, a senior working on his BFA in Visual Arts is located in Gallery 234 in the lower level of the Union. The exhibit is ongoing until Nov. 6.
A committee at the 234 Gallery selected Young’s “A Westward Flow” after viewing pictures of his work and a written statement about the work he was proposing to display.
The exhibit consists of many different mediums including, but not limited to: paper, wood, resin, cast iron, steel, cement, Styrofoam, charcoal and pastels.
“I enjoy combining disparate materials in a way that make them seamlessly flow together visually,” said Young. Young was one of the student artists featured in the 4th Biennial Western Cast Iron Art Conference that was hosted by UW in September.
Young was able to find inspiration for his work through other artists and their voices.
“The inspirations for this exhibit, I would have to say, are the artists that have come before me. The voices of many artists such as Giocometti, Kapoor and Bacon have inspired me to find my own voice as a visual artist,” said Young in regards to the exhibit.
According to the University of Wyoming’s website, the merging of the disparate materials in which Young has referenced will come together in the exhibit which explores figural movement, architectural inspirations and the relationship between man and nature.
“My current body of work investigates water as it compares to the human form, this is done by dissecting both figure and water out of their original context and placing them together in juxtaposing and symbolic positions,” said Young.
Young also explained what he is most excited for with this exhibit; “I am most excited to actually be able to see the progression of my work and the possibilities of future work to come.” Young said he hopes to reach out to the audience in a visual level. Young also strives to display abstract thought and ideas that can best be communicated through visual means. Gallery 234 has commented on their excitement to host this “up and coming local artist.”
