At the end of the year I do not think that there is going to be many SEC schools in the top four because many of them still have to play each other, and I think the committee is going to rank conference winners a lot higher than those power houses in the SEC.
Last week the college football world finally got its first look at how the College Football Playoff committee ranked the top teams in college football. They gave us their top 25, which is pretty standard for college ranking, but the top four teams are really what everyone wanted to see and the teams that have the best shot at getting into the top four. I thought I would give my quick thoughts on how I think the ranking would shape up at the end of the year based on these first initial rankings.
To start, the committee’s top four teams were Mississippi State, Florida State, Auburn and Ole Miss with Oregon and Alabama being the last two teams looking. My first thought was, “wow, three SEC schools in the top four what a surprise.” Then I realized that this is just the first rankings and a lot of these teams still have to play each other in the upcoming weeks.
These teams are not going to stay here for long, like Ole Miss fell pretty far after its loss to Auburn this past Saturday. Each week it’s going to be really interesting to see how far these teams in the top four fall and the teams that are slowly climbing their way into the top four.

At the end of the year I think the top four is going to end up looking like this: Mississippi State, Florida State, Oregon and TCU. I do not think that Mississippi State or Florida State are going to slow up anytime soon and are basically locks to make it into the playoffs. I think the committee has a bit of a soft spot for Oregon and if they win out they’ll probably get the nod over the other one loss schools. TCU is my wild card and I think that if they can win out the committee will have to put them in based on the teams that they have beaten. If the cards fall right I could see a second SEC sneak into the top 4, but I have a feeling that they are just going to beat each other up and end up screwing themselves out of the playoffs.
I’m so happy that these playoffs are finally happening and cannot wait to see how it all plays our as we come down the final stretch of this college football season.
