Head coach Craig Bohl said after the game, “It was a really disappointing performance and it’s not to detract from the fact that Boise State is a good team. We didn’t handle some adversity tonight and sustained some more injuries which is tough to handle, but we have to work through those. We need to regroup and get ready for New Mexico next week.”
Wyoming found themselves down 14-0 early in the game, but was able to answer in the second quarter with a six yard touchdown run by Freshman Brian Hill. Boise State scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter to bring their lead to 21. The Broncos scored four touchdowns in the third quarter and Wyoming did not respond until the fourth with another touchdown run from Hill. Boise State scored one more touchdown before the end of the game to bring the final score to 63-14. The defense allowed 558 total yards on defense and was only able to generate 227 yards on offense.
Senior wide receiver Dominic Rufran said, “There are so many variables as to why we didn’t play well tonight. Maybe it was the preparation, where our heads were at as a team – I have no idea. Whatever it was, they played a better football game than us.”
Rufran had three catches for 19 yards in the loss, and with them he continued his streak of games with a catch. He brook a record Mountain West record with 48-striaght games with a reception.
Hill had 65 yards rushing on 21 attempts and senior quarterback Colby Kirkegaard went 10-14 for 74 yards passing. Kirkegaard exited the game early with an ankle injury and it looks like he will not be playing next week.
Coach Bohl said, “Colby suffered a severe ankle sprain so we will see where we are at (next week). I know he had a hard time putting any weight on it. That typically indicates that he won’t be in a position to play next week.”
With Kirkegaard going down, Sophomore Tom Thornton got put into the game. He went 4-10 passing for 50 yards with and interception.
Thornton spoke on taking over the quarterback position, “It wasn’t easy going into the game with the tough circumstances, being down the way we were. At that point, the offense is one dimensional. We had some opportunities and didn’t capitalize. We fought hard and banded together as an offense.”
The Cowboys will play their final game of the season in New Mexico where they will face the 3-8 Lobos. The game will begin on Saturday at 1 p.m.
