A University of Wyoming student was charged Friday for alleged sexual assault and sources indicate that the arrest took place in the UW Fine Arts Center.
Albany County Prosecuting Attorney Richard Bohling confirmed yesterday the case is pending in the circuit court.
Jordan McGuire, 27, allegedly committed sexual assault in the first degree on November 21, according to the circuit court charges filed December 5.
“As more fully described in the affidavit of probable cause…said defendant did inflict sexual intrusion on a victim and the victim was physically helpless,” the charges read. “The defendant knew or reasonably should have known that the victim was physically helpless and that the victim had not consented.”
The County Clerk’s Office confirmed McGuire is being held on a $100,000 bond and he has yet to make bail.
McGuire is enrolled as a graduate student in the music and theater department and was teaching voice classes on campus, Paul Ditty, a UW senior who lives below McGuire at Campus Habitat, said.
Interactions between the two were minimal, however, Ditty said he and his roommates were always skeptical towards McGuire.
“We were kind of a little uneasy with him at first. We let him in our apartment and talked a few times,” Ditty said. “It was always kind of an uneasy feeling around him, and he was always a little off.”
It appears McGuire, a former high school teacher in Indiana, could be a repeat offender, as this is not the first time he has been accused of sexual assault.
In August, McGuire was acquitted of sex abuse charges from a 2012 incident, according to a Tristate news article. In the same instance, he was charged for supplying alcohol to minors.
“It was alleged he performed oral sex on a 18-year-old male who had passed out drunk,” the article reads. “However, McGuire’s defense attorney, Scott Danks, argued the alleged victim was cognizant and aware of the sexual act taking place.”
Seven years prior, McGuire was charged with Criminal Sexual Assault and Battery in Saline County, IL, according to the article; however, he apparently plead guilty to the battery charge and in return had the assault charge dropped.
The Albany County Police Department (ACPD) will not release an official statement until McGuire’s arraignment, which is still to be announced, Brian Fritzen, ACPD lieutenant, said.
A preliminary hearing for McGuire is taking place today at 10:30 a.m in the Albany County Courthouse and is open to the public.
