Cowgirls tennis was in full swing in their victory match over Northern Colorado Sunday. The Cowgirls defeated the Bears 5-2, spoiling the closing to UNC’s home opener weekend and maintained UW’s undefeated record in dual wins.
Despite the victory on the road, Cowgirls head coach Dean Clower believes the Cowgirls could do better.
“We definitely didn’t play our best tennis today and that had a lot to with Northern Colorado,” Coach Clower told gowyo.com. “Our seniors stepped up and clinched the match and showed their leadership. Magdalena (Stencel) played tennis with a lot of fire and has all the skills necessary to get the next level.”
The Cowgirls monopolized doubles play winning all three matches, taking the doubles point and gaining an early lead.
In the first and second slot doubles teams freshman Magdalena Stencel and senior Jessica Parizher and seniors Christa Gecheva and Alma Espinosa took their Bears opponents in 7-5 wins. Wrapping up the doubles action was senior Silviya Zhelyazkova and sophomore Dorottya Jonas whom took a 6-2 victory over junior Hilary Walters-West and sophomore Marissa Baca.
The Cowgirls remained ahead in singles, taking four of the six matchups in the first, third, fifth and sixth slot.
Stencel swept the first singles match 6-3, 6-2 over UNC’s senior Chrissie Hoolahan. She was followed by a win from Zhelyazkova in a set of three 6-1, 6-8, 6-1 against Walters-West in the third slot.
The only points for the Bears came in the second and fourth slot of singles. Bears freshman Lea Krajcovicova found a 6-3,6-4 victory over Jonas as did sophomore Beth Coton who took her match 6-2,6-4 against Gecheva.
In the final singles rounds the Cowgirls rallied to take the final points of the match and a W on the road.
Tying up for the day was Parizher in slot five defeating UNC’s freshman Lindsey Bennet in a set of three 6-0, 6-7, 6-2. Espinosa drove home the Win with the fifth and final point in a swift victory over Baca 6-4,6-3.
The Cowgirls will return to play in Lubbock, Tex. against the Texas Tech Lady Raiders on Friday at 4 M.T. at the McKeod Tennis Center.
