The spring Job fair begins today and you can expect representatives from business, government, non-profit and agriculture occupations ready to see what you’ve got to offer.
The fair is being held in the Wyoming Union Ballroom from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Organizers advise anyone hoping to attend should bring plenty of resumes and dress professionally to impress any would-be employers.
Even those not expecting to acquire a job at this fair could still be worth your time, said Michael McNamee, the career services coordinator for the University of Wyoming.
“Even if you don’t get a job, you still get to practice talking to people, which a lot of student don’t have a lot of experience with,” McNamee said. “Just the mere fact of giving your elevator speech, your minute speech on why you’re a good employee, that’s really beneficial for students to practice at. ”
There will be over 50 employers representing different companies from across the state and beyond. Specific employers for today include representatives from the state department, senators, medical organizations and local businesses.
The fair will continue tomorrow at the same times, focusing on careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Representatives from energy corporations, research labs and technology firms will be there at the same time and place as today.
McNamee said students should be attentive to detail during the fair. One thing important for applicants to remember when approaching a potential employer is to take special take of their shoes before entering the fair, McNamee said.
“The first thing that recruiters notice about men is their shoes, so you want to make sure your shoes are shined,” said McNamee. “For women, a lot of the time it’s their nails. So you want to have your nails put together.”
Students who miss this week’s job fairs can expect another in April for summer jobs. Another big job fair is set to happen next fall, but a specific date has not been scheduled at this time.
