The Wyoming Cowgirls tennis team split a couple of matches against Nebraska and then Illinois State over the past weekend. Wyoming lost to Nebraska on Friday with a 6-1 score and then beat Illinois State 7-0 on Saturday. The Cowgirls are now sitting at 4-4 overall.
In the singles matches against Nebraska, Wyoming saw everyone fall to hands of the Huskers except for redshirt freshman Magdalena Stencel. She won her match in two sets of 6-4 and 6-3. Senior Christa Gecheva was able to take her match to three sets. She lost the first one 2-6, but then won the second set 6-4. The third set went to Matysova of Nebraska with a score of 10-8.
“We lost a tough one today. We played much better in doubles just didn’t convert on big opportunities. Maggie has been working hard this past week to correct a few things and it showed today,” head coach Dean Clower said.
Wyoming went 1-2 in the doubles matches. The combination of sophomore Dorottya Jonas and senior Silviya Zhelyazkova were able to win their match against the Cornhuskers 6-3. Senior Jessica Parizher and Stencel were one point away from winning their match but could not pull out the win.
The next day was much better for the Cowgirls, with a 7-0 win over Illinois State.
“It was good to see the team rebound after a tough loss yesterday. I thought we played pretty good doubles this morning and kept the energy going in singles. We have a lot to work on over the next several weeks in order to reach our goals for the year,” head coach Dean Clower said.
Wyoming began the match by winning all three of their doubles matches. The Pokes number one pairing of Stencel and senior Jessica Parizher won their match 6-1. Seniors Alma Espinosa and Christa Gecheva won their match 6-3 and the pairing of Jonas and Zhelyazkova won 6-1.
The Cowgirls were also able to sweep the singles matches as well. The singles began with Stencel winning in sets of 6-2 and 6-4. Junior Nastya Tokareva won her match against Illinois State in two sets of 6-2 and 6-1. The rest of the Cowgirls were able to win their matches in two sets.
The Pokes will be back in action on Saturday, March 7 against the Iowa State Cyclones. The match will be held at Iowa State and will begin at 9 a.m. MT.
